Data analyst
We are seeking a Data analyst to join the Freiburg Galaxy team:
- Contract Duration: 2 years (renewable)
- Salary: E13 TV-L for a post-doc or equivalent
The Freiburg Galaxy Team is offering several services to enable reproducible and accessible research for everyone. Our flagship service is the European Galaxy server UseGalaxy.eu which is the biggest Galaxy instance in Europe, and one of the biggest worldwide. We are also passionate about training! Our team wants to support researchers to take part in their own data analyses by educating them in e.g. big data analysis, programming, data management, and Galaxy server administration.
Your role
The Freiburg Galaxy Team has a wide variety of active projects where you could be involved in. Our current areas of expertise include:

Distributed computing and systems programming
We are engaged in the development of workflow systems, cloud computing based solutions, and other projects involving high performance and data intensive computing.

Web-based visualization and visual analytics
We are building web interfaces for visual analysis of large data analysis that leverage cutting edge web technologies.

Informatics and big data analysis and integration
We build and use tools to analyze large datasets generated by high-throughput DNA sequencing to understand genomes and genome function.

Bioinformatics application areas such as transcriptomics, epigenetics,metagenomics and genome-annotation.

Machine learning and cheminformatics
We want to make machine learning and cheminformatics more accessible and reproducible.

Linux containers technologies and software management with conda
We are heavily involved in Bioconda and BioContainers to build the new scientific stack for reproducible research.

Train the next generation of data scientists
We aim to democratize bioinformatics infrastructure and knowledge. We are passionate about training and education across the world.

Building the European Life-Science Infrastructure
The European Galaxy project is part of de.NBI, ELIXIR and EOSC to build a sustainable and transparent research platform.
You have
You should have a university degree in the computer sciences or life sciences and have several years’ experience in a software developer capacity.
- Programming skills in R or Python
- Experience in analysis of high-throughput biological data (genomics, transcriptomics, epigenetics, proteomics, etc.)
- An interest in cutting-edge molecular biology and its data-generating technologies
- Experience with Unix-based environment
- Willingness to learn new skills as the project requires
- Self-motivated and capable of working both independently and as part of a team
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and English language skills

We offer salaries according to TV-L, e.g. E13 for a PostDoc or a PhD student, with 100% positions.

The university offers a specific education program for PostDocs to develp their professional and personal skills. You could also acquire broad teaching and training skills by giving lectures and Galaxy hands-on training courses.
